Summer Maintenance for Your Residential Fence

Hercules Fence of Washington DC Summer Maintenance

Perform some summer maintenance on your residential fence to keep it in top form.

Summer is the perfect time to step out and give your fence some much-needed attention if you weren’t able to do so in the spring. After a harsh winter and extensive spring rains, your fence might be looking and feeling a little worse for wear. To keep your fence in top form, there is some important summer maintenance to do that will ensure your fence survives the next season of harsh weather.

Inspection

The first step in your summer maintenance routine is to inspect the fence. Check it for any problems—loose or missing hardware, loose or missing panels, rotting wood, and any other potential issues. Take inventory of what needs to be repaired and replaced, so you have an overview of necessary repairs and can get everything done efficiently.

Loose/Missing Hardware

Any missing nails or screws should be noted and replaced if the panel itself is in good shape. Securing connection points strengthens your fence and makes it more stable so it can endure inclement weather and some abuse from people and animals. This is the quickest and easiest part of summer fence maintenance, only taking a few minutes for each missing piece to be replaced.

Sealing & Staining

Wooden fences should be sealed, especially if it hasn’t been done in a while. Sealing the wood keeps it moisture-resistant, prolonging its life by holding rot and mold at bay. Staining will get your wood fence looking like new again, revitalizing the look of your entire property. It will make a surprising difference in the look and feel of your fence.

Cleaning

The final step of summer maintenance is to give your fence a nice refreshing cleaning. For metal fences, you can use a power washer. For vinyl and wood fences, power washers might do some damage if not handled carefully so it’s better to use a hose nozzle to get a good jet stream going to rinse down your fence. If your fence needs a little something extra for that perfect level of clean, use a diluted vinegar solution to clear out the gunk before spraying your fence down.
