Summer is the perfect time to get outside and refresh your fence after a harsh winter season. Your property has taken a lot of abuse over the past few months and now that it’s warming up you can take some time to give your fence a health check, do needed maintenance, and add some visual interest while you’re at it to offer your fence a new life in the summer season.
Maintenance
The early days of summer are an important time for fence maintenance. Winter is harsh and can leave your fence in disrepair. Walk around the perimeter of your fence, both inside and out, to check for damage and loose hardware such as nails or screws. For wood fences, keep an eye out for panels that are showing signs of rot. Determine what can be salvaged through repair and what will need to be replaced. Replace irreparably damaged sections of the fence as soon as possible to keep out intruders and keep in children and pets.
This is also the perfect time to give your fence a wash. For metal and vinyl fences, you can simply rent a power washer and let her rip. If you don’t want to go that route, you can get a simple hose attachment that creates a powerful stream of water. Scrub the fence with mild dish detergent or diluted vinegar and hit it with the hose for a fresh shine. For wood fences, you’ll want to wet the fence before applying diluted dish soap or vinegar to the fence. Use a scrub brush to get into the grain for a deeper clean and clear out any mold or mildew you come across. After that, hit it with the hose or a power washer on a low setting to clear it out.
Decoration
Summer is a fun time for outdoor art projects, and your fence can become one too. Consider letting your children choose colors to paint your wood fence, or finding a new stain to add some visual interest to it. You can also hang string lights from any fence type, or add creeping plants around it for a unique look. Create a vertical garden that goes up your fence, or have a family night where you create art projects and then hang them up on your fence. There are a lot of ways to jazz up the look of your fence and make it feel more you.
Landscaping
Summer is the perfect time to get some landscaping done, and your fenceline is prime real estate for bushes and flowers. Create a garden around the perimeter of your fence to break up the monotony of it and create a beautiful perimeter with great visual appeal. It will look amazing and make it that much more enjoyable to be outside in your yard watching pollinators go to work or just enjoying the beautiful greenery and fresh air.
