Tips on How to Clean Your Vinyl Fence

Hercules Fence of Washington D.C. Vinyl Fence

A vinyl fence is great because it is low-maintenance, but it does still need some basic care to stay in top form.

If you have a vinyl fence around your property, you made an investment in safety and security for your home, your family and pets, and your things. Vinyl fences are great: they’re sturdy and strong, and they last a long time without any major maintenance. They’re not entirely maintenance-free, however, since nothing truly is. They are very low maintenance, though. Basically, you still need to clean them every once in a while. Read on to learn some great tips for keeping your vinyl fence clean.

Spray It Down

The first and best step to cleaning a vinyl fence is just to spray it down with water. You can use a hose or a bucket, and yes, it really is that easy. In the vast majority of cases, just wetting the fence with water will remove most of the dirt, debris, and grime. If some of the dirt is a little harder than most to get off, you can try adding a high-pressure nozzle, but in most cases, you will not need to go as far as an actual power washer.

Some Scrubbing May Be Needed

If there is stuff that won’t come off with just water, try a magic eraser next. These cool tools are great! Wet the magic eraser and use it to scrub away the dirt. If that doesn’t work (or you don’t have one) use a sponge and a simple cleaning solution, like a little sudsy dish soap in warm water.

Bleach

If the above steps don’t help, it may be time for a little more oomph. This is especially true if you’re dealing with something like mold or mildew on your fence. To use bleach, you have to water it down substantially (1 part bleach to at least 5 parts water), and you need to remember to wear gloves. Remember, that colored vinyl can actually be bleached by the bleach, so in some cases, this may not be a good idea.

Other Cases

If none of the above works, it may be time to pull out specialized cleaners and tools. Iron stains from rust are especially hard toe get off, so you may need to buy a special cleaner to deal with them. You might also consider an actual pressure washer, but you have to be very careful with it so that you don’t damage your fence.
