Preparing Your Fence For Rain And Wind

Home preparedness for a hurricane or heavy rain is not complete if you aren’t protecting the areas surrounding your home- remember to prepare your fence!

Home preparedness for a hurricane or heavy rain is not complete if you aren’t protecting the areas surrounding your home- remember to prepare your fence!

As we’ve seen these past few months, hurricanes are very prominent in the southern U.S. and Central America. Hurricane season isn’t over yet, and while we all hope Washington D.C. doesn’t get hit by a hurricane, we should all be prepared for heavy rain this time of year. By preparing for a bad storm in advance, you can minimize the impact and protect your home and fence from severe damage.

Maintain Your Fence All Year Round

While the high winds and rain of a hurricane or severe storm can destroy anything in their path,  a sturdy fence will stay standing and protect your home and yard from further damage. Wooden fences are not the best option for homes in disaster-prone areas since they are less sturdy and very flammable. However, there are fire-proof coatings and sealants sold to apply to wooden fences to make them less flammable. Regardless of what type of fence you own, you should always keep it maintained throughout the year.  A storm can hit at any moment, and it is important that your fence is repaired and in the best shape possible when the time comes.

Clean Your Yard

Torrential rains aren’t the only thing your fence needs protection from, as strong winds will also pick up objects along its path that could do serious damage to your fence. Before a storm hits, take a walk around your yard and remove objects or secure them tightly to the ground. This includes any decorations, lawn furniture, trampolines, and flagpoles, as these can result in damage to your fence or home.

Check Your Trees

After you’ve secured everything on the ground and have no dangerous objects in your yard, your next task is to look up and check your trees. During a hurricane or rainstorm, high winds can cause branches to fall off or can even completely knock trees over. Any branches hanging over your fence are dangerous and should be trimmed before the storm hits. Maintaining your tree’s branches year round is also an important step, so you won’t have to run around preparing your yard for days before the storm hits.
