Preparing Your Fence for a Hurricane

hurricane seasons

Hurricane season isn’t over yet.

Hurricane Matthew is a timely reminder that being prepared for a hurricane is important during hurricane season, even in Maryland and Washington, D.C. If you own a residential or commercial fence, there are special steps that you can take to protect your investment and your home from further hurricane damage. By preparing for the hurricane in advance, you can minimize the impact of the storm on your fencing using these tips.

Yesterday Was the Time to Repair

If your fence is in need or repair or replacement, the time to do so was yesterday! It is important to regularly inspect and maintain your fence so that when hurricanes do come, you don’t have to worry about costly or impossible last minute repairs. Make sure that your fence is in good condition before the hurricane comes through, as even strong new fences can suffer damage during Category 4 hurricanes like Hurricane Matthew.

Walk Around Your Yard

One of the biggest dangers during a hurricane is not the wind itself, but the projectiles that the wind can carry. Take a walk around your front yard, back yard, and entire property to secure any potential projectiles. Things like lawn chairs or loose toys can be harmless during a typical thunderstorm. During a hurricane, they can become deadly projectiles that will cause damage to you, your house, and your fence. Any lawn decorations, patio furniture, and external decorations should be removed and secured for the duration of the hurricane.

Don’t Forget to Look Up

Now that you have taken care of most of the immediate dangers on the ground, look in the air! Do you have trees that have branches hanging over your fence or very close to your fence? Trim back any vulnerable branches before the hurricane comes through. Any branches hanging over your fence are an immediate danger to it, as a strong wind could detach or damage the branch (which will land smack dab on your fence!). Regular pruning and tree maintenance are important so that you don’t have to scramble around in the days before a hurricane to protect your fence and home.
