Protecting Your Fence from Thunderstorms

thunder storm fence damage

Don’t let a thunderstorm damage your residential fence!

As the summer gets into full swing, thunderstorms are constantly rolling into the DC area. While many people love the sound of thunder rolling into the area, they never love the look of a damaged fence outside of them home. Fences play a big role in protecting your home and giving it curb appeal, but what happens when you suddenly have a damaged fence at your doorstep? Let’s take a look at how you can protect your fence from summer thunderstorms.

Trimming the Trees

One of the worst problems thunderstorms can leave in their wake is downed tree limbs. As the window roars outside of your home, you may experience fallen limbs and broken branches. So how do you protect your home from this natural enemy? By cutting it back. Remove overhanging limbs and branches from your yard to ensure the safety of your fence. Remove all of the dead and dying trees from your yard and away from your house as their chances of falling increase during high winds. You should also ask neighbors to trim their overhanging trees if they are near your fence and you could even be nice and offer to split the costs.

Remove Large and Loose Objects

We all love to use our decks and patios in the summer, but even patio furniture can be used against our fences during thunderstorms. These objects could be picked up in high winds and knocked into your fence, causing substantial damage. When a storm rolls in or when they are not in use, make sure to remove them from your yard and put them into storage so they won’t cause problems later.

Fix Loose Posts and Sections

Just like anything else around your home, fences can be subject to general wear and tear. Doing weekly inspections of your fence will allow you to look for loose boards, panels, and posts around your fence. These loose parts could become damaged in high winds and could even cause property damage to your home or to the neighboring houses. Make sure to remove and replace any posts that have started lifting from the ground and fix any loose and damaged boards that could come loose in a strong wind.

All Gates Matter

While gates are made for moving, they aren’t necessarily meant to be slammed repeatedly from high winds. Gates can quickly become damaged in a thunderstorm when they have repeatedly banged around. To protect your gate, fence, or home from damage, make sure to latch your gate very well or to purchase another lock to secure it tightly.

Protecting your fence is extremely important all year round but as the summer storms roll in, it can be dangerous not to protect them. For more information on protecting your fence or installing a new one, call Hercules Fence of Washington, DC.
