Options for Installing Fence on Uneven Terrain

Hercules Fence of Washington DC Uneven Terrain

Uneven terrain can present some challenges when installing a fence, but there are ways to make it work.

If you have a lumpy perimeter, you might be wondering how you’re supposed to get a fence properly installed. Thankfully, there are several methods that can be used to do this with some being better than others depending on your needs. Consider the following methods for installing a fence on uneven terrain.

Straight

Straight installation ensures that the top of the fence is aligned. This isn’t the best option for uneven terrain, because it will leave gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground. This allows for diggers to get underneath the fence and it doesn’t look as nice at the bottom as it does at the top.

A way to make this viable is to fix the terrain and fill in the gaps, but this is a lot more work than some other potential options.

Racking

Racking is not viable with all fence types, but it is an excellent option for uneven terrain. While this creates a top that is not uniform, it eliminates gaps at the bottom and follows the form of the terrain. Racking can be done with wooden and metal fences and is a good option for anyone with animals or even children that might try to escape through digging.

Stepping

Stepping is similar to racking, but it is done with whole panels of fencing rather than individual planks. This is a good option for uneven terrain but will leave gaps at the base of the fence in many cases depending on the length of the panels and the terrain. If you have a steep decline or incline, stepping might not be the best option because of these potential gaps. Stepping can be done with PVC, wood, and metal fencing.

Which is Best?

There’s no easy answer to this question. The best fencing installation method will depend on your terrain and what you need your fence to do for you. Pets and children should be considered, as well as the possibility of visiting wildlife that may dig under your fence. Aside from safety concerns, think about how you want your fence to look and what material you prefer. The best way to decide if you’re unsure is to consult professionals whose experience can help you find the best solution.
