What is the Purpose of Tennis Court Fencing?

Tennis court fencing is absolutely necessary because it protects the people both on and off of the court from unintentional injury.

If you’ve seen a tennis court, you’ve noticed that it has a fence around it. In fact, you’ve probably never once seen a tennis court without fencing. That’s because tennis courts are required to be fenced in, much like baseball fields. These sports feature a small ball traveling at high speeds, and this is a serious safety concern for anyone nearby. Due to this, tennis court fencing is required to protect both the players as well as the onlookers.

Protect Players

You might be surprised to learn that tennis court fencing is a safety measure for players as much as it is for onlookers. When players are on the tennis court, they need to be shielded from objects and debris that could enter the court from outside. This includes weather events, such as the wind blowing sticks, branches, leaves, and even garbage around that could end up on the court or make contact with a player.

It also contains equipment. A runaway ball can be a hazard to a player, who may run out to get it and end up in a scenario where they become injured. The fence keeps the ball on the court, so the players only need to walk to the fenceline to either obtain a new ball or pick up the one that flew past them.

Protect Onlookers

Even more importantly, tennis court fencing protects onlookers and spectators. In tennis, the ball can travel at extreme speeds that are dangerous if it makes contact with a person. Players assume responsibility for themselves while they’re on the court, but onlookers need to remain safe from runaway balls that could cause serious injury. In addition, other equipment issues, such as flying rackets, need to be contained within the confines of the court. The fence also creates a solid barrier that keeps players from running out into a crowd of onlookers to try to return the ball. This could result in a multitude of injuries to both the player and the spectators.

A tennis court fence can vary greatly depending on the court type, budget, and location. On average, tennis court fencing is between 10 and 12 feet in height. Chain link, welded wire, and steel bar fencing are some of the more common options, as a hard fence will perform best at containing runaway balls and keeping everyone safe. There are soft fencing options, such as windscreen fencing, which are inexpensive to install and maintain. However, this type of fencing doesn’t have the durability that hard fencing options have, and it won’t be as secure as other options.
