The Pros and Cons of Vinyl Fencing

Hercules Fence of Washington D.C. Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing has gained popularity in recent years for its clean aesthetic and simple design.

Vinyl fencing has been experiencing a major uptick in popularity in recent years, and it’s not difficult to understand why. It has a clean aesthetic and is sturdy enough to stand up to many day-to-day weather patterns. When deciding on which fencing is best for you, it’s important to consider the pros and cons of vinyl fencing.

Pros

Low Maintenance

Vinyl fencing is a great low-maintenance option as opposed to a wood fence. A simple wipe-down and power wash once a year is usually enough to keep your vinyl fence looking as good as new. Wood is an organic material that requires a lot more maintenance and care to keep it from rotting.

Doesn’t Degrade

Vinyl doesn’t rot or degrade since it’s an inorganic material. While wood can fall prey to mold and mildew that eats away at the material, vinyl fencing doesn’t have this problem. Being made of vinyl, this type of fencing won’t break down and only needs the occasional cleaning and repair to remain intact.

Add-Ons

Vinyl fencing can have additions put on, such as lattice toppers, that spruce up its look and make it more visually interesting and appealing. This can be a great way to dress up your fenceline and elevate the look of your property so that you’re not stuck with a basic-looking fence.

Cons

Not Eco-Friendly

Unfortunately, vinyl is a type of plastic and therefore isn’t environmentally friendly. This material needs to be processed in a factory, and its failure to break down makes it a less favorable option for the environment, especially compared to wood.

Weather Damage

Vinyl fencing is sturdy enough to withstand most environmental hazards, but certainly not all of them. Extreme weather can subject vinyl fencing to damage, potentially snapping panels or felling poles. These fences are lightweight, so they can struggle in areas with severe weather patterns and extreme winds.

Staining

While vinyl fences don’t rot, they can become stained if they aren’t cleaned regularly. Since most vinyl fencing is white, this can be an ugly problem to deal with. A build-up of dirt or algae can create brown and green staining around your fence that leaves it looking a lot worse for wear.
