Painting Your Fence During Storm Season

painting your fence for storm season

Before storm season hits, why not paint and protect your fence?

Whether you’re in Maryland, notorious for summer downpours and flash flood warnings, or Florida, well used to hurricanes and hurricane force winds, storm season can be a tricky time to consider making any major home improvements. Severe weather can take a huge toll on your yard and fence. How can you prevent damage during storm season?  Take some easy steps to make sure your fence is ready for all of the summer storms.

Repair

Take a walk around the perimeter of your fence and see what condition it is in. Any boards that are loose, panels that are collapsed, or posts that are rotting can make for a big issue when a storm blows through. Any part of your fence that is loose will almost certainly be pulled from the ground or fence and potentially take other pieces of the fence along for the journey. It’s also a safety issue, as anything loose can easily become a projectile and cause damage to you, your vehicles, or your home. Don’t worry about replacing your fence at the end of storm season and repair your fence now.

Don’t Be Afraid to Paint

You might be worried about painting your fence during storm season, when it seems dangerous to consider taking on any project outside that could be quickly ruined. However, consider why you paint your fence in the first place—to protect your fence! The best time to paint your fence is before or during the start of storm season, as this ensures your fence is protected from potential water damage. Painting or staining your fence seals the wood. As a result, moisture will have more trouble penetrating the material and causing any rot from moisture. Painting also helps ward off any insect infestation issues.

If Your Fence Is Already Painted or Stained

Is your fence already painted? Fences should be repainted every year or two, especially in areas with a dramatic storm season. If there is any chipped paint or faded paint, it may be damaged even more during a severe weather event from the wind and rain whipping against it. Repair or touch up any necessary places on your fence before the storm starts, so you don’t have to worry about replacing after.

If Your Fence Isn’t Made of Wood

If your fence is vinyl or aluminum, you don’t need to worry about painting or staining your fence before a storm. It is still important to walk around and check for any repairs, but there is no need to fret over moisture rot. Make sure that your fence’s finish is intact and there are no sections in need of replacement before storm season rolls through.
