How Can I Remove Ivy From My Wooden Fence?

Plants can bring color and life to your yard’s landscaping. While flowers, shrubs, and trees are often welcome additions to any home, some plants are less so, specifically one invasive species: ivy. Ivy plants are unique in that they grow and attach themselves to vertical structures such as walls, windows, and yes, even fences. If left unchecked, ivy can do damage to your wooden fence and disrupt its appearance in your yard. Read on to discover how you can remove ivy safely and effectively from your wooden fence.

One way to remove ivy is to start at the source: the roots! Cutting ivy out of the ground by the roots guarantees that the entire plant will be removed without the risk of regrowth being present. You can tackle the roots with pruning shears to remove the portion of the plant that is out of the ground, and then use a small shovel to dig up the rest of the root system. While this is an effective way to remove ivy and stop it from growing on your wooden fence, it is labor-intensive and will temporarily cause a bit of a mess in your yard.

To pry the ivy off of the fence itself, you will need gloves, a garden hose, weed killer, and a pair of shears. Starting with the hose, dampen the ivy plants so that the vines are easier to pull apart and tug loose. Then, while wearing gloves, gently pull at the ivy and snip off thicker vines with the shears. Being gentle is key, as ivy is a strong plant that will pull wood away with it if you are too forceful. Once the ivy has been removed, spray the wooden fence down with weed killer to discourage it from growing back again.
