Do I Have to Worry about Ice on my Wood Fence?

As we get further into fall, the temperatures are just going to get colder and colder. And as the mercury drops, chances of inclement weather are steadily on the rise. You already are probably prepared for dealing with ice and snow in your driveway: You’ve got the rock salt prepped and the shovels at the ready for the day that inevitable first snowfall hits. But what about other important parts of your property, such as your wood fence? Do you need to be worried about ice affecting that as well? Read on to find out!

Ice on a Wood FenceWill Ice do Damage to a Wood Fence?

Ice can pose a threat to your wood fence in many different forms. For one thing, if there is freezing rain at any point during the fall and winter months, the ice could form a layer over the wood of the fence rails, freezing solid on top of it. If you try to chip the ice off by hand, it could potentially damage the wood itself, and if you wait for it to melt naturally, the water could seep deep into the pores of the wood, putting it at risk of developing mold or rot. Before the worst of the weather hits, consider a waterproof sealant for your wood fence’s surface to keep ice from doing too much damage.

Ice doesn’t have to form on the wood fence itself in order to cause problems, however. When tree limbs become heavy with ice and snow, they can snap off and fall, possibly right on to your fence! In order to avoid this catastrophe, carefully prune overhanging tree limbs now so that come winter, they do not pose as big of a threat to your wood fence.
