Waterproof Your Wooden Fence for Winter

waterproof wooden fenceWith winter coming, so does weather-proofing your home, your car, and your body. Wooden fences, while they make a stylish and attractive addition to your home, also require care and upkeep to ensure their longevity. One of the best things you can do for your wooden fence is consider waterproofing it prior to the winter.

You should already have a maintenance plan in place for fence care – one that involves regularly removing dirt and debris from the surface of the wood. If you let dirt and debris cover your fence without regularly cleaning it off, your wooden fence will gradually decay. You should also check to see if your wooden fence’s waterproof barrier is still in effect. If the fence’s weatherproofing has begun to wear off, it will also lead to degradation of the materials.

To check your fence’s waterproofing capabilities, take a spray bottle and spray a small amount of water onto the wood. If the wood turns darker within just a few seconds, then your fence needs more waterproofing. If the water beads on the surface of the fence, your waterproof barrier is still effective and you don’t need to worry about applying more.

If you do need to apply a waterproofer, make sure you thoroughly clean your fence using a special wood cleaning solution. We can provide some products that will do the trick. After removing the solution, let the wood dry for a few days so as to not accidentally seal moisture into the wood and contribute to decay. Use an applicator pad or sprayer to apply the waterproofing solution, but be sure to keep the application layer thin and neat. Repeat until the entire wood fence has been covered in the waterproofing solution.

With regular maintenance, your fences should remain strong, sturdy and attractive for many years.
