Options for Locking Your Gate

Options for Locking Your Gate

How will you keep your loved ones safe?

When choosing the right type of material and the correct design for your new or replacement commercial or residential fence, make sure you consider how you would like your gate to look (and latch)! There are many different ways to latch your gate, including simple built-in locks, deadbolts, and sliding bolts.

Lockable Gate Latches

Lockable gate latches have a lock included as part of the latch or in addition to the gate latch (as in the case of a padlock that goes through a hole built into the latch). This way of locking your gate can be purchased in a variety of designs and styles, from old-school pull string latches to elaborate modern latches with locks included in the design.

Deadbolts

Lockable gate latches are classic and simple, but sometimes you need something that offers your gate additional security. Deadbolts are a great way to further secure your property. They can be tricky to install, but you can often get them installed as part of your actual fence installation. A deadbolt generally works in combination with a gate latch to secure your gate and many times they can be purchased to match each other. Deadbolts can have one or two cylinders. Single cylinder deadbolts have a knob on the side of the gate facing your home and a lock on the outside of the gate. If you would like to secure your gate from both sides, you will need to purchase a double cylinder deadbolt.

Slide Bolts or Barrel Bolts

The last common option for securing your gate is a slide bolt or barrel bolt. Deadbolts work from both sides of the gate, whether they are single or double deadbolts. Barrel or slide bolts are installed on the inside of the gate, or, the side of the gate that faces your home. These are used as an additional way to secure your gate and increase the security of your fence. These work by sliding a barrel into a catch and thus stopping the gate from opening on either side. These are a great extra measure of security when you have crafty pets or kids running around that you would like to keep inside your fence!
