Learn the signs of how to know it’s time for a new residential fence.

Fences are sturdy structures, but they don’t last forever. Although you’ll likely get many years of use from your fence, there will come a time when it will need repairs or even replacement. If you’re torn between the two, there are some factors to consider and signs that will show you that it’s time to install a new residential fence. Read on for more insight about when it’s time to replace your fence.

Fasteners are Missing

If you have a wooden fence, it’s probably being held together with some combination of nails, screws, and metal fasteners. Outdoor exposure to weather and human or even pet interaction can cause these fasteners to become loose and fall off. If you see holes or discoloration where fasteners should be, then you know that they’ve come off in that location.

Connections are Loose

Wood is a material that naturally swells and contracts in different weather. In the heat, the wood will swell and then return to its original shape in cooler weather. From this movement, connections will become loose over time. Rust from moisture on the nails will also cause them to eventually become loose and even break.

Wood is Rotting

Another issue that comes from exposure to moisture from rain and snow is rotting. Over time, this moisture in the wood will cause it to become brittle and rot from the inside out. Much of this kind of damage is irreparable. Once wood starts to rot, there is no turning back and no remedies to stop the damage. Sealants and moisture repellants need to be regularly applied to combat the issue of rotting.

Boards are Broken or Cracked

The swelling and contracting cycle that happens in the wood will eventually cause it to crack. As the seasons change throughout the year, the wood responds to those changes in the weather, which will eventually cause the boards to crack and even break. Although you’ll likely be able to replace individual boards that have been affected, you’ll be in a constant cycle of replacing boards as they become damaged. It will probably be a smarter investment to replace the fence and have it properly treated.
