How to Choose the Right Fence Height

fence height tips

Your fence height will depend on factors like functionality. If you have a dog, make sure your fence is high enough to keep them in.

There is a lot that goes into a residential fencing project, not the least of which is design choices. You will have to choose a material, a style, a color, a location, an installer, and a height. The height of your fence is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in regards to the functionality of your fence. When you’re determining the right fence height for your home, you should consider important factors like your ideal look, the purpose of your fence, and the codes and standards of your neighborhood associations.

Height for Purpose

People have fences installed for so many different reasons. Maybe you just want to add an element of class to your home, or perhaps you’re trying to increase the privacy and security of your home. You also might be installing a fence to keep your pets in, and wild animals out. Determine your needs, and start planning your fence height from there. If you simply want a fence for elegance, height will depend entirely on your style. Choose whatever you think is most aesthetically appealing.

When you’re trying to keep a dog in, a fence of four to six feet in height, should do the trick. This depends on the size of your dog, and their ability to jump. Some dogs can climb over a six foot fence, so adapt your fence to your dog’s needs. If you’re trying to keep animals out, start by identifying the problem. If you’ve got rabbits, a lower fence that goes deep into the ground is ideal. Deer will require an entirely different fence though.

If privacy is your main concern, you should choose the highest fence you can. Privacy fences range in height all the way from four feet to eight feet. Be cautious when choosing the right privacy fence though, because some neighborhood associations cap fence heights around six feet.
