Learn about Hercules Fence’s project to provide a safe environment for endangered whooping cranes.

Hercules Fence recently finished a project for the National Zoo’s Smithsonian Biological Conservation Institute (SBCI) in Front Royal, Virginia to provide a safe environment for the endangered whooping crane. There are less than 900 whooping cranes left on Earth, and the project focused on creating an area for the birds to breed and help create a self-sustaining population. Hercule Fence’s Contribution

Hercules Fence partnered with Kee Construction from Winchester, Virginia to construct five 50’ x 150’ rectangular enclosures. The project is valued at $400k+, as the enclosures were made to prevent escape of the cranes, as well as invasion by predators to keep the birds safe. Over approximately eight weeks, Hercules Fence built five enclosures in total, and each enclosure was divided into three pens of 50’ x 50’. Double gates were used throughout the area to allow the zookeepers to pass between the pens.

We chose to use door type hinges so that there were no large gaps between frame and posts to prevent small, young cranes from escaping. As for materials, we used a 12-foot high chain link fence with a dig barrier to prevent intruders. Our team also used overhead netting to prevent the birds from flying away. The net is supported by four ½” steel cables that run from the corner posts attached with eye bolts to a 16’ high center post in each pen. To cover the top rail, a corrugated plastic pipe was installed to protect the net.

Next, we needed to stabilize the entire structure. We completed this task by using overhead bracing across aisleways, and attaching ½” steel cables on the outside perimeter and affixed to helical screws which were embedded in concrete. Also, wire insulators were installed on the exterior fence so that charged wired could be used to prevent any intrusion. These were crucial steps to ensure the birds are protected at all times and are safe to create a self-sustaining population for years to come.
