For many homeowners, you probably purchased your home with the fencing already installed. If you want to install a new fence or make upgrades, you should consider how the project will impact your neighbors and their homes, especially owners of row homes. People use fences to create beauty, security, and boundaries, but it’s important to maintain great relationships with your neighbors in the process. Check out this guide to sharing a fence with neighbors.

Talking with Your Neighbors

Before you begin your fencing project, you should let your neighbors know about your plans, especially if the fence will be in the middle of your property lines. Make sure that you both have an agreement of where that property line is so that you don’t accidentally build on your neighbor’s property. You don’t have to outline your exact design plans for your neighbor, but it is great etiquette that they are aware of your plans. A great tip is to build the fence about two feet inside your property line.

Paying for the Fence

If you find that installing a fence that sits between your property and your neighbor’s land, then you should have a conversation with your neighbor about splitting the cost of installing the fence. In this case, you’ll likely be responsible for the maintenance of your side of the fence while your neighbor will handle the side that faces them. Although it would be nice to split the cost, your neighbor is in no way obligated to pitch in; you’ll just have to finance the project on your own.

More Tips

Choose a classic design for your residential fence that will complement the look of your home and that of the neighborhood. Face the unfinished or less attractive side of the fence inward, facing your home and perform maintenance on both sides of the fence. If it’s your neighbor’s fence that sits between your property and theirs, you can spruce up the look by planting hedges on your side or installing your own fence.
