Think Big
While a tiny little dog will be easily contained by a shorter fence, even a four foot tall fence is unlikely to discourage even a husky or golden retriever sized dog from taking that big leap out of the yard. While some owners install extensions on their residential fence every time their pup makes a jump for it, this only slowly teaches dogs to jump higher and higher. A bigger fence is always better. Depending on the breed, that tiny puppy will be a huge dog before you know it.
Make Sure Your Residential Fence Is Hard To Climb
No matter how high your fence is, if it is easy to climb your dog will be able to climb right over it. Even the smallest dogs can make quick work of a fence not built with this in mind. When choosing a fence, make sure that its design is completely climb proof. Chain link is not great for this purpose, as it is essentially made of footholds for any precocious pup to take advantage of. A solid panel wood fence which provides dogs with no leverage is ideal.
Consider A Privacy Fence For Your Pup
While dogs have no shame and rarely require any privacy, privacy fences are great for pets for several reasons. As your dog will not be able to see what is happening on the other side of the fence, he will not become agitated by passing cars, pedestrians, squirrels, and maybe even other dogs. This will cut down on barking from your pet and other neighborhood dogs on their walks.
