Cleaning for Your Vinyl Fence

Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences are one of the easiest fencing options for you and your home. But they do require care one day a year.

Compared to many of the residential fencing options available, a vinyl fence may seem like a dream. No painting, no refinishing or even involved maintenance for 364 days out of the year. But one day a year, you may need to spend an afternoon with a brush in one hand and a hose in the other cleaning your vinyl fence. But how should you clean your fence?

Why Does Your Vinyl Fence Need to be Cleaned?

If you have ever owned a vinyl fence or driven by one, you have probably noticed that it looked a little green or yellow. While it doesn’t happen all at once, algae can slowly start to grow on your fence from the mixture of the sunshine and water from condensation, dew, and past rain showers. Algae feeds on the sugar and nutrients that collect on your fence from nearby vegetation like grass and bushes. Unfortunately, the only way to prevent algae growth is to put up your fence in the shade. On the upside, since vinyl fences is a non-porous material, any algae growth or staining will only be on the surface level. These surface level problems will be easy to clean up and only has to be done once a year.

Cleaning Your Vinyl Fence

While a power washer is often the easiest way to clean a vinyl fence, it is not necessary. If you don’t have a power washer, go the simple route and grab a garden hose, a gallon bucket, and a stiff bristled brush. You can either purchase a formulated solution for cleaning vinyl fences or you can make your own mixture out of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. To clean your fence, mix the cleaning solution in your bucket with water. Use your garden hose to wet one section of your fence at a time then soak your brush in the cleaning solution and start to scrub the wet area where the fence is stained. After it is scrubbed, rinse off the soap and residue with the hose before moving onto the next section. To keep your fence clean, make sure to rinse off your fence regularly especially after mowing your lawn. Vinyl fences are extremely easy to take care of, making them an extremely popular option for your Washington, DC home!
